While Ferdinand Porsche was designing cars, Adolf Hitler was waging war in Europe and plunging the world into chaos. The fates of these two men were intertwined in the 1930s, when Hitler made two promises to the German people after his election as leader of the Third Reich: one was steak for dinner, the other was a car for every German family that could cost no more than 1000 Reichsmarks.
The KdF car was constructed and became known as the "people's car." But to the people the cars were not sold, because all of them were confiscated by the army and converted into military vehicles - known as Kübelwagen. Technically, the Kommandeurswagen was a Type82 Kübelwagen with a Beetle body and four-wheel drive chassis, intended specifically for senior officers at the front.
The model
The 1:12 scale Type 82e Kommandeurswagen takes you back to the war-torn era of the 1930s. The extremely detailed model comes completely ready to drive with built-in electronics and includes remote control and battery out of the box.
The Engine
The original's air-cooled engine requires no water for cooling, making it ideal for use in hot and cold environments. As a result, it was delivered in large numbers to the North African Corps under Erwin Rommel. The engine crankshaft flywheel is connected by a belt, which also drives the generator and cooling fan. The semi-circular fan shroud is a key feature where the airflow to the cylinders is distributed on both sides. Although the model is powered by a brushed motor, nonetheless, all of this is aftermarket! That is, you can even observe the spinning blades in the air intake when the engine is running.
The gearbox
The original commander car had 4 forward gears. On the model, FMS/RocHobby designed a 2-speed transmission to simulate the 1st and 3rd gear speeds of the prototype. Power passes from the top of the rear differential and then returns to the rear axle. You can easily switch between 4WD and RWD mode by remote control. This switching function is perfectly transferred to the model and makes for more fun off-road driving.
The chassis
The portal axle, popular on the crawler market today, was already mass produced 82 years ago, here the reduction ratio was 15:21. This had a minimum ground clearance of 310 mm which puts all modern off-road vehicles on the market today in the shade. In the real car, the front and rear wheel speeds are balanced by increasing the gear ratio of the front differential, while in the model we set the reduction ratio to 1:1 for common front and rear differentials.
The solid, load-bearing, stamped-center-bar chassis and body have high torsional rigidity. The central drive shaft and electrical wiring are hidden in the ridge tube. The front and rear wheels have torsion spring independent suspension, which have long travel and take up little space. We use torsion springs instead of torsion bars to make the front and rear suspension easy to disassemble.
The tires
The tires are the most common 5.25×16. Just like the real car, the wheels need to be attached with 5 bolts. The spare wheel is mounted under the hood and can be removed and mounted. The body The body, on which the FMS research and development team spent most of their time, is a real dream for any scale fan. Every detail has been modeled after the original. Can the doors be opened? Sure, let's try the door handle. The door can be opened with the built-in spring lock, when closing you can hear the crisp sound of the spring lock. The original had a fabric top mounted in the skylight to facilitate escape in the event of an attack or rollover. The model has a removable plastic roof attached, with a fine weave pattern to simulate the texture of the fabric roof.
The interior
The soft rubber interior seats are covered in a simulated cloth texture and are great for 1/12th scale driver figures. The rear seat backs can be folded down for easy access to supplies from the trunk. The armrest in front of the rear seats has four clips in the center that fit into holes in the floor to store four 98K rifles. As usual with FMS/RocHobby, the steering wheel and steering are linked together, which allows the steering wheel to turn as you steer.
The remote control
A 4-channel digital proportional remote control system is used for the electronic system. In addition to channels 1 and 2 for steering and throttle, the third channel controls the gear shift and the 4th channel switches between 4WD and RWD.
The lighting system
The model has a ready integrated lighting control system that allows you to turn on the headlights during normal night driving. Linked turn signals and brake lights are located at the rear of the vehicle. The camouflage headlights can be turned on only during night driving.
The packaging
Yes, even the packaging is worth mentioning on this model. The packaging is made of eco-friendly foam that simulates German tin ammunition from World War II. The reusable box can withstand long transportation is easy to store and easy to carry.
The fun
We hope you'll have as much fun with the Type 82e Commando Car as the FMS team had bringing this classic piece of wartime history to life.
